At their June 11, 2025 meeting, the City Council authorized the City Manager to finalize a lease agreement for the library to relocate to temporary storefront space at Rimrock Plaza, located at 4721 East Palm Canyon, near Gene Autry Drive. This 6,000-square-foot retail space will allow the library to continue offering services on a smaller scale, ensuring that our community still has access to essential resources, programs, and support while the main library is under renovation. Though more compact, the temporary space is thoughtfully planned to meet the diverse needs of our customers during this transitional period.
The temporary library will feature a kid’s corner, teen collection, public computers, a Friends of the Library used book sale area, daily newspapers, and a selection of popular books, DVDs, and music CDs. We’ll also continue serving as a Passport Acceptance Agency and will offer some children’s story times, teen programs, and the adult Spanish book club. However, the majority of Adult programming will be “on the go,” with events planned at various locations throughout the City including Welwood Murray Memorial Library and in partnership with local organizations such as Mizell Center, Palm Springs Cultural Center, the LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert, and our city’s Community Centers. We’re excited to get this show on the road—it’s been a long time coming. Our next milestone is awarding the construction bid at the July 9, 2025 City Council meeting.
One of the most anticipated events is our Summer Reading Grand Finale which this year will be followed by our Library Renovation Celebration and Closing Party, both scheduled on Saturday, July 19. The Summer Reading Grand Finale begins at 1:00 p.m., followed by the Closing Party from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. If you participated in Summer Reading, join us to find out if you’ve won a grand prize. Will it be “Pickleball with the Chief,” a Nintendo Switch, a PlayStation 5, or another amazing prize generously donated by the Friends of the Palm Springs Library?
The Closing Party will include fun, food, and poetry—and a special moment: we’ll open the 30-year-old time capsule hidden behind the Teen Zone wall. This will make way for a new time capsule to inspire future generations! There will also be face painting, a photo booth, writing special messages on a few walls and other activities. We hope to see everyone there—current and former employees, Friends of the Library, Library Board of Trustees, and Foundation Board members, City Councilmembers, and even former Library Directors! And to our library customers: this is your moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and imagine all that’s ahead. Our future is bright!
Meanwhile, if you’re interested in supporting the Palm Springs Public Library Foundation’s fundraising efforts or seeing your name featured in one of our new spaces, visit the Foundation’s website at https://www.pslibraryfoundation.org/ for more information and to learn more about charitable gifts or legacy opportunities. It’s never too early to invest in the future of your library.
