FEBRUARY 2026 - Library Progress and Updates: It's A Dirty Job

When you reorganize a drawer or closet, are you the type of person who makes a bigger mess before things get better? Do you pull everything out, sort it carefully, and put it back more organized than before? Or do you pull everything out and then abandon the project for something more interesting? I plead the Fifth. Fortunately, our construction contractors fall into the first category. They make a mess, but they always put it back better than ever.
In this latest library renovation update, workers have truly gone to town. Flooring and footings have been torn up so they can be rebuilt stronger and safer for future generations. To add new electrical conduit and modern plumbing lines, sections of the floor must be demolished to allow for proper installation. The building’s 50-year-old foundation and footings also need seismic and structural upgrades to support new features such as additional study rooms and larger public restrooms. This work ensures strong columns and side walls that will serve the community for decades to come.
Another visible step in the renovation involves trenching across the driveway. This work allows new electrical, plumbing, and data systems to connect the former JC Frey Building with the same modern infrastructure serving the Main Library.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the workers doing these dirty but essential jobs. Their work is highly skilled and technical, and transforming an architect’s drawings into full-scale reality is truly an art form.
We also thank the Palm Springs Public Library Foundation for reaching the first milestone of its Capital Campaign: two million dollars raised. Fundraising continues toward the ultimate goal of seven million dollars, which will establish an endowment to support library programming and services well into the future. Our community has valued library service for more than 100 years, and this generosity ensures that legacy will continue. To be part of the Library’s next chapter, consider making a donation to the Palm Springs Public Library Foundation’s Capital Campaign, supporting library programs and services for generations to come.
