Why are Vista Chino and Gene Autry Trail designated as Highway 111?

In 1991, at the request of the City of Palm Springs to acquire control of the section of Highway 111 (Palm Canyon Drive) that ran straight through the heart of downtown, the state Transportation Commission approved re-routing Highway 111 onto Vista Chino and Gene Autry Trail, south to where it reconnects with Highway 111.
